Making new friends (for free!) without leaving your home

You’re not alone in feeling lonely! I’ve been reading from increasingly more people that lockdown made them come face to face with their lack of friends. You might feel doomed, but there are many ways of reaching out to new people! Apart from the obvious blogs, here’s a few more ideas you might not have considered:

  • Passionate about climate change?
In the past few weeks I’ve joined training sessions, live talks and hangout sessions with Extinction Rebellion. Remember, everything has moved online, and there will be lots of new faces! You can feel involved, learn more about topics such as citizen assembly’s or meet local activists, all from the comfort of your home. Here’s a list of future events all around the globe!
  • Love theatre?
Every Thursday, the National Theatre is streaming free plays on youtube. Last week I watched Jane Eyre with thousands of others, and we all chatted away about our lives and where we’re watching from. People exchanged social media handles, and the whole experience felt like a live screening! If you fancy a good conversation and want to feel part of a group, this might be right up your street.
  • Budding screenwriter?
On Reddit’s screenwriting subreddit, the industry has come out in full force. Loads of professional writers are organising question and answer sessions, coffee sessions, and a few have even set up free lectures! I myself have a class set up on Sunday with a professor from the US! People are exchanging scripts and feedback, knowing that we’re all in the same boat.
  • Struggling with overeating, debt or dysfunctional families?
All 12-step meetings have moved online, and not all are drug-based! Here’s a list of all the fellowships that might be useful, whether you’re trying to quit nicotine, heal from mental illness, are co-dependent or a workaholic. There’s something for everyone! A great way to meet people all over the world, have a friendly chat and learn more about self-growth!
  • And for everyone else: meetup.com!
Whether its discussing musicals, finding drinking buddies or listening to punkrock music, you will find your tribe here. Meeting new people can be intimidating, but remember: you can log off anytime!

And these examples are just the ones I’m aware of, let me know if you have heard of any online screenings or networking opportunities and so on! Coping with touch deprivation is a reality for a lot of us, so you might want to check out my blog post on it.
Don’t settle if you’re feeling lonely, you could be making someone else’s day!
